Is My Son Watching Porn?

By on 09-27-2012

Decades ago, when children were curious about things, they would either ask a parent or a friend. On some occasions, they may have even reached for an encyclopedia or other reference book for answers. If the question was related to something they felt embarrassed about or intuitively knew wasn't an appropriate topic to voice, then they may have just kept it to themselves.

With the advent of the Internet, however, kids today have access to a virtually infinite amount of information. This can be a good thing at times like when a kid needs to research information for school or is just curious about how electricity works, for instance. In these scenarios, a search engine can be a useful tool.

 When Google Can Be Dangerous

We all know that there are some things that kids are curious about that they don’t necessarily need to know, however. We also know that curiosity can be a very compelling feeling. When you combine a strong curiosity with a virtual world full of temptations, then the results can be disastrous.

How Do You Know If Online Pornography is a Problem?

Websites today can be loaded, minimized, and closed in an instant, so even if you check in on your child occasionally while he's on the computer, he could still be viewing inappropriate online content without your knowledge. Here are some of the warning signs that online pornography is a problem for your child.

  • A sudden or increased interest in the computer
  • An attempt to hide computer use
  • Solitary computer use
  • Decreased interest in other activities

What Should You Do If a Problem Does Exist?

If you do suspect that your child is viewing pornography online, then it's time for you to have a face-to-face conversation with your child. How comprehensive the conversation is will depend on your child's age and your unique family values, but at the very least, you should let your child know that he is not allowed to view pornography, online or offline. You should also address the issue of honesty, and let your child know that he can always come to you with any questions, no matter how uncomfortable or controversial.
