Connecting with strangers, while being exposed to potentially mature or violent themes were very real risks. In the age of AI, newer ways to explore roleplay and connection, through companion bots and character platforms like PolyBuzz, might remove the risk of connecting with strangers, but <\/span><b>these machine-based chats pose their own risk to children and teens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here\u2019s what parents need to know. <\/span>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What can children do on PolyBuzz?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technically, users under 18 can\u2019t use PolyBuzz &#8211; the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polybuzz.ai\/terms-of-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terms of service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> state that use is \u201cstrictly prohibited\u201d for minors. But to check this, as with many apps, <\/span><b>PolyBuzz relies on self-reporting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: users enter their birth date on the mobile app to \u201cverify\u201d their age, while on the web version of the platform, they don\u2019t have to do anything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the 18+ restriction, PolyBuzz\u2019s own guide to features and \u201cbenefits\u201d indicates it\u2019s \u201ctailored for young users eager to explore virtual character interaction\u201d, revealing who the platform\u2019s target audience really is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For teens who enter an incorrect date of birth, or who aren\u2019t prompted at all, PolyBuzz features include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>A vast selection of character bots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with themes, relationships, and defined back stories for text-based and audio roleplay.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>AI character creation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tools.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>AI-generated photo and video sharing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing users to create character avatars and scenes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>A \u201cfreemium\u201d subscription model<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: free users can message and chat, while premium subscribers can save chats, unlock exclusive characters, browse ad-free, and have limits lifted on chats and voice playbacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>PolyBuzz: The risks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>NSFW and inappropriate content<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PolyBuzz prohibits \u201cpublic display\u201d of NSFW (not safe for work) content, and claims that content recommended while browsing the app (e.g. characters, roleplay descriptions) is screened and moderated. Images and \u201cprofile pictures\u201d of characters are often highly sexualized and inappropriate for children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if not directly explicit in nature, some character descriptions and scenarios don\u2019t sound like individuals or groups you\u2019d want your child talking to: \u201cSchool psycho: Has anger issues, is protective, slow-burning, loves you.\u201d \u201cClingy boyfriend: He cries if you leave him alone.\u201d \u201cMHA pervert sub: There\u2019s a substitute teacher, and he\u2019s a pervert.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Limited parental controls<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Even though the platform states in its terms of use it\u2019s for 18+ users only, PolyBuzz offers parental controls, which allow families to limit the time spent on the app, and with good reason &#8211; some users on Reddit boast timelogs of over 11 hours a day on the app. Parents and children can view usage patterns, but <b>there\u2019s no insight into the content children access<\/b> and the characters they might be engaging with.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Hidden content<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PolyBuzz allows users to create their own chats with multiple characters, meaning the conversation is private, even with parental controls activated. <\/span><b>With AI, you have no way of knowing or predicting what output your child will come across<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and they could be guided towards conversations that are inappropriate for their age, or which expose them to more adult topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Emotional attachment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With conversational AI bots &#8211; even ChatGPT &#8211; <\/span><b>there\u2019s a risk that children (and adults) could develop <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/blog\/ai-companions-and-your-child\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>strong emotional attachments<\/b><\/a><b> to characters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that feel real to them, even if they\u2019re not. Engaging conversations, available 24\/7 without judgment, and which validate feelings or opinions, mean chatbots like this can be very appealing and difficult to turn away from.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>In-app purchases<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s a free version of PolyBuzz, the platform offers three tiers of paid access: basic, premium, and ultimate. Features vary between them, but paying for an account allows users to browse ad-free, engage in unlimited chats with longer memory (meaning bots are less likely to \u201cforget\u201d conversations, forging a stronger \u201cconnection\u201d), and get faster responses. <\/span><b>The most expensive tier gives users access to what PolyBuzz calls the \u201cPassion model\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a more intense, unrestricted, and emotional layer, mostly designed for sexual roleplay.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Incentives and streak-based rewards<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disabling in-app purchases helps reduce the risk of unwanted or spontaneous spending, but PolyBuzz also allows users to collect coins through engagement, watching ads, and building streaks, which they can then choose to spend on specific features not available in \u201cfree\u201d mode. The risks involved, such as exposure to inappropriate content, mature themes, and the chance young people can build unhealthy relationships with these characters, mean <\/span><b>PolyBuzz should be off-limits.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s true that children and teens are curious, and they may engage with character bots or apps like PolyBuzz without seeking them out: <\/span><b>ads for character bots and AI \u201cpartners\u201d are all over the internet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; in their favorite games, in social media ads, and likely discussion topics in the group chat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means <\/span><b>you need to be prepared to have conversations and set guardrails surrounding your child\u2019s AI use<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and character bots. Some ways you can help make their experience with AI safer include:\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Having open conversations<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For kids, chatbots and characters might just seem like a harmless way to interact and roleplay, testing their creative and storytelling skills. But they need to know the risks these bots pose, and the impact they can have on wellbeing and emotions. If your child lets you know they\u2019ve used AI chatbots, or asks you about them, <\/span><b>speak to them calmly and without judgement,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlighting concrete risks and explaining what they can do if they ever feel unsafe or worried by something they see online.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Blocking, restricting, and filtering AI chatbot use<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most important things we can do as parents when allowing our children to have access to their own device is to make it age-appropriate: this means blocking and limiting exposure to content and apps we know are unsuitable for their age and development. <\/span><b>Qustodio automatically filters inappropriate websites, and notifies parents whenever a new app is downloaded and used<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
