We try our best to prevent our children from seeing inappropriate content, protect them from dangerous people, and keep their screen time in check. But underage gambling is a growing issue fueled by the speed and ease of apps and platforms, and ethically bogus targeted ads &#8211; among other things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A 2026 report from Common Sense Media revealed that 36% boys aged 11 to 17 <\/b><b>reported gambling in the past year &#8211; <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/report\/2026-betting-on-boys-report_final-for-web.pdf\"><b>and 34% of those boys participated in sports-related gambling.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Moreover, boys who bet on sports were among the most habitual gamblers, with 60% of boys who participated in sports gambling doing so once a month or more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/teens-and-gambling-online\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rise in teen gambling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another digital risk primarily affecting teen boys. Can include draws, point spreads, or point totals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>In-game or live betting. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Placing bets while the event is happening. For example, betting on who will score next or the outcome of the next quarter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Proposition or \u201cprop\u201d bets. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagers on specific events within a game. For example, the number of goals scored by a player, the first team to score, or total fouls.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Parlays or accumulators. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combine multiple individual bets into one wager. All selections must win for the bettor to receive a payout.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Season or tournament-length bets. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagers placed on outcomes that are determined over the course of an entire sporting season or multi-week tournament, rather than a single game. Popular examples include March Madness brackets and fantasy leagues.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>esports betting. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagering on competitive video game tournaments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/report\/2026-betting-on-boys-report_final-for-web.pdf\"><span>season\/tournament-length wagers with friends or family<\/span><\/a><span> were the most common form of sports-related betting among adolescent boys who gamble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What\u2019s encouraging boys to gamble on sports?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rise in sports gambling among adolescent boys can likely be blamed on a combination of the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Peer influence (including family)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possibly the strongest indicator of whether or not a boy gambles is the gambling activity of those closest to him. A huge <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/report\/2026-betting-on-boys-report_final-for-web.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">84% of boys whose friends mostly or all gamble report gambling themselves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, compared with just 17% of those with no gambling friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s not just friends. <\/span><b>Over half (54%) of boys who had gambled in the past year reported gambling with family members <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; with season\/tournament-length contests being a favorite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><b>It just showed up on my feed!\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly half (45%) of boys who gamble report viewing gambling videos or streams online. Rather than seeking it out, most exposure is thanks to algorithms &#8211; of the boys who reported seeing gambling content online,\u00a0 59% said it \u201cjust started showing up&#8221; in their feed, compared with 14% who actively searched for it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gambling apps and platforms are created to be frictionless and make betting on sports as easy as possible. After clicking on the content &#8211; and entering a fake date of birth &#8211; a minor could be gambling in minutes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Advertising and promotions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you watch sports events, you\u2019d be hard-pressed to find one without gambling ads embedded throughout the broadcast. <\/span><b>The majority of boys (57%) said they saw gambling ads on live or streaming TV during sports events,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making it the third most likely place a kid will come across gambling ads (behind YouTube, 61%, and social media, 60%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gambling platforms are commonly promoted by YouTubers, game streamers, and athletes &#8211; many of these influencers have large followings among young boys. \u201cFree bets\u201d and sign-up bonuses lower the psychological barrier to entry, making gambling sound like a low-risk shortcut to riches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gambling mechanics in games<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most insidious way that young boys can be conditioned to gamble,\u00a0 gambling mechanics &#8211; such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/what-are-loot-boxes-how-harmful-are-they-to-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loot boxes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/what-are-gacha-games\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gacha systems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; are included in many popular video games. Whether kids are using real money or not, these gambling mechanics can introduce kids to chance-based thinking and risk-taking at a much-too-young age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loot boxes are virtual items in video games that players can purchase or earn through gameplay, offering randomized rewards like character skins, weapons, or other in-game bonuses. Research has shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/conditions\/gambling-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% to 7% of young people may develop a gambling disorder <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as opposed to around 1% of adults. Some attribute this to young brains being more sensitive to dopamine, the \u201cfeel-good\u201d neurotransmitter released during gambling wins. This heightened response can make sports gambling even more addictive for teen boys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Conflict with friends and family<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A report by the UK Gambling Commission revealed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk\/report\/young-people-and-gambling-2024-official-statistics\/ypg-2024-impacts-of-gambling-on-young-people-the-impact-of-gambling-on\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost 1 in 10 minors had lied about their gambling habits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to their family or friends, and 1 in 12 admitted their gambling has led to arguments with those close to them.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gamblers often hide or downplay their habit &#8211; especially when talking about their expenditure and losses &#8211; creating conflict and distrust with those around them. Using someone else\u2019s payment card without permission is also a major cause of conflict in families -especially among higher loss gamblers. Boys who reported losing $51 or more in the past year were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/report\/2026-betting-on-boys-report_final-for-web.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly three times more likely to use their parents&#8217; debit or credit cards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without permission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Disinterest in school and other activities<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being preoccupied with sports gambling can lead to missed homework, reduced concentration in school, and a lack of interest in anything that isn\u2019t about winning bets &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk\/report\/young-people-and-gambling-2024-official-statistics\/ypg-2024-impacts-of-gambling-on-young-people-young-peoples-engagement-with\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 20 underage gamblers admitted that their habits led them to miss school<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gambling activates strong \u201cquick-win\u201d pathways, which can make slower pursuits like school, extracurricular activities, and family time seem less rewarding and boring in comparison.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Serious financial loss<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since developing brains struggle to assess risk versus reward accurately, teenagers are more likely to fall into dangerous gambling patterns and rack up significant losses. In a desperate attempt to recoup losses, a child might even use their parent\u2019s payment card, leading to a nasty surprise when the monthly statement arrives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mental wellbeing concerns<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gambling of all kinds, especially when started at a young age, can have serious, long-term mental health consequences, including anxiety, stress, depression, sleep problems, and impulse control issues. Start conversations early<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your son may not be gambling away his allowance, but that doesn\u2019t mean he isn\u2019t being conditioned to associate gambling with fun.
