But no, they\u2019re talking about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">looksmaxxing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a trend, practiced almost exclusively among young boys, that focuses on \u201cmaximizing\u201d one\u2019s appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some aspects of looksmaxxing are harmless, funny, and even rooted in good health advice, there is also a more serious &#8211; and sometimes dangerous &#8211; side that parents should know about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is looksmaxxing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looksmaxxing (sometimes spelt looksmaxing) is an online trend that focuses on improving looks through grooming, fitness, and style &#8211; along with other, riskier methods that we\u2019ll get to later. <\/span><b>Looksmaxxing is rooted in the belief that the more attractive a man is, based on measurable physical standards, the more successful they\u2019ll be socially, in dating, in their career<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; basically everywhere in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online looksmaxxing communities believe that attractiveness is objective and can be measured based on traits such as jawline shape, facial symmetry and proportions, skin quality, height, body composition, eye shape, and hair thickness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trend was born out of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/what-is-the-manosphere\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>incel\/manosphere<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forums in the 2010s, then spread into mainstream Gen Z social media culture in the early 2020s &#8211; especially on TikTok, Reddit, YouTube, and Discord. These days, most people use \u201clooksmaxxing\u201d as a general term for grooming, fitness, skincare, and glow-ups, as well as in memes and parody short videos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the term has been diluted, it is still somewhat linked to the manosphere and incel\/black pill culture &#8211; toxic and misogynistic online subcultures centered around the belief that men can be permanently excluded from romantic and social success due to genetics or appearance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looksmaxxing can also lead young men down a real path of mental health issues, body dysmorphia, and reckless bodily modifications. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Looksmaxxing: parents&#8217; glossary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looksmaxxing comes with its own lexicon. You might have heard your teenage son expand his online vocab with these terms:\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Softmaxxing &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The safe, standard ways to improve appearance. This includes things like getting a good haircut, taking care of your skin, working out (gymmaxxing), eating healthy, drinking enough water, and dressing better.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hardmaxxing &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more extreme methods of achieving a certain look. This can involve surgery, hair transplants, and the use of steroids, weight-loss injections, or unregulated supplements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mewing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; A viral technique to, allegedly, permanently improve the appearance of the jawline by resting the tongue against the roof of the mouth. There\u2019s no strong scientific evidence that it works.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Canthal tilt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; The angle between the inner and outer corners of the eyes, often obsessed over in looksmaxxing communities. A positive canthal tilt, sometimes called \u201chunter\u2019s eyes\u201d, is where the outer corner of the eye sits slightly higher than the inner corner. It\u2019s believed by looksmaxxers to be more attractive and display more confidence than a neutral or negative canthal tilt.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Chad &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A man blessed with looks and confidence, who is abundantly successful socially and in dating. Mostly used ironically in memes and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/blog\/tiktok-quick-guide-parents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>TikTok<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> culture, but used more seriously in manosphere\/incel spaces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ascension<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Transforming into a more attractive, successful, or higher-status version of yourself; e.g., <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBro ascended after the haircut<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mogging &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outclassing someone else in appearance, confidence, status, or presence, to the point where the other person looks inferior in comparison; e.g., <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Chad is like 6&#8217;5. He totally mogged me in front of my girl.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also be specific with derivatives like \u201cheight mog\u201d and \u201cface mog.\u201d<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><b><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>PSL scale &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone\u2019s perceived attractiveness ranking, essentially where they supposedly sit in the dating marketplace; e.g., \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s PSL 8,\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s low PSL.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sub5<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Someone considered below a 5\/10 attractiveness rating. Used in a harsh, fatalistic way, e.g., \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s sub5. It\u2019s over for bro<\/span><\/i><span>.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is looksmaxxing a joke, or is it something to worry about?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time you come across a looksmaxxing-related post on social media, it\u2019s ironic. An example of a looksmaxxing meme might be about someone spending hours optimizing their appearance with seemingly endless routines\u2026 only to stay home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another common meme premise is when someone takes an ordinary aspect of self-care, and frames it as a breakthrough discovery that one must do to \u201cascend\u201d. These <\/span><b>everyday activities often get branded with the \u201c-maxxing\u201d suffix<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, e.g., \u201csleepmaxxing\u201d, getting adequate sleep, \u201clemon water-maxxing\u201d, drinking lemon water in the morning, \u201cposturemaxxing\u201d &#8211; you probably get the idea by now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><b>trends ride the line between being a joke and being serious<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depending on who\u2019s reading it. For example, \u201ccarrotmaxxing\u201d involves eating large quantities of carrots (sometimes up to a bag or multiple cans a day) to achieve a &#8220;natural,&#8221; sun-kissed tan without sun exposure. While consuming massive amounts of beta-carotene can indeed affect skin color, it\u2019s greatly exaggerated online for humor.\u00a0 As your height is genetically determined, \u201cheightmaxxing\u201d content is mostly ironic and centered around wearing lifts, or standing next to someone shorter. Yet, <\/span><b>there is a serious side<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where looksmaxxers and blackpillers treat height as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> important for attractiveness and status &#8211; sometimes leading young men to seek risky limb-lengthening surgery. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/static.qustodio.com\/public-site\/uploads\/2026\/05\/21103356\/2026-03-Blog-What-is-looksmaxxing_Inside-Image.png&#8221; alt=&#8221;Teen boy looking in mirror&#8221; title_text=&#8221;2026-03-%91Blog%93-What-is-looksmaxxing_Inside-Image&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>The dangers of looksmaxxing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jokes and memes aside, <\/span><b>looksmaxxing is linked with online communities that promote harmful ideology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and can lead people &#8211; especially teenage boys &#8211; down some dark and dangerous paths in efforts to \u201cascend\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Social comparison and impacts on self-esteem<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looksmaxxing communities regularly rate people numerically (\u201csub5,\u201d \u201cPSL 8\u201d), and comment sections are direct and harsh when talking about someone\u2019s appearance. Teens in these communities are encouraged to constantly compare their appearance to influencers, peers, and online \u201cideal\u201d beauty standards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just strangers in a forum that can judge your looks; some apps can do it too. Omoggle is a \u201clive mogging battle\u201d platform that pairs you up with another user in a 1v1 video chat. AI then rates your appearances on the PSL scale and calls the winner.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The teenage years are tricky enough <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/blog\/negative-body-image-in-your-teen\/\">when it comes to body image<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and looksmaxxing amplifies the erroneous belief that appearance equals value and worthiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Body dysmorphia<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just a few minutes of viewing looksmaxxing content will have anyone analyzing their jawline, hairline, and waistline. For already body-conscious teens, this level of self-scrutiny and fixation on perceived flaws can easily worsen body-image anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Risky \u201cimage-correction\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pressure to ascend or max out their PSL can lead teens towards \u201chardmaxxing\u201d &#8211; much more dangerous methods of self-improvement than, say, getting a good haircut and drinking enough water. These can include bonesmashing, extreme dieting, and using steroids, peptides, and weight-loss injections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some young looksmaxxers even resort to cosmetic surgery, from Botox and hair transplants, to leg-lengthening. Having surgical procedures at such a young age not only exposes teens to unnecessary medical risks, but it also reinforces the idea that normal features or insecurities need to be \u201cfixed\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Extremist communities and echo chambers<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looksmaxxing was born out of the manosphere, and much of the content overlaps. A teen looking up skincare tips can quickly be funneled into toxic communities &#8211; such as incels and blackpillers &#8211; where harmful beliefs about gender, attractiveness, status, and self-worth are shared and promoted. It\u2019s easy for a teen to find themselves in an <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/echo-chambers-on-social-media\/\">echo chamber<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; where algorithms continue to serve them up more and more of one kind of fatalistic messaging, with little of anything else.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pseudoscience and misinformation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looksmaxxing communities often present advice as scientific fact, even when claims are exaggerated, misleading, or downright wrong. Teens are still developing their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/blog\/teach-kids-critical-thinking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>critical-thinking skills<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and so they\u2019re more likely to believe bold claims, and potentially put themselves at risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Financial exploitation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looksmaxxing influencers prey on insecurity to make a quick buck. This could be from paid programs and coaching, or from selling supplements and enhancement products. Some creators offer appearance-rating services, such as facial analysis, and \u201cPSL ratings,\u201d plus one-on-one looksmaxxing advice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Who is Clavicular?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clavicular, born Braden Eric Peters, is probably the most famous \u201clooksmaxxing influencer\u201d, and is active on <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/is-kick-safe\/\">Kick<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and TikTok. He often blurs the line between satire and sincerity; much of his content uses irony, absurdist humor, meme language, and exaggerated internet slang &#8211; but <\/span><b>he also appears to genuinely believe in parts of looksmaxxing ideology and even promotes dangerous practices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He\u2019s an advocate for &#8220;bonesmashing&#8221;, a pseudoscientific practice involving hitting one&#8217;s own cheekbones with a hammer or one&#8217;s fist to have them grow back stronger, and openly claims to take steroids and crystal meth to maintain a slim, athletic physique &#8211; despite being barely out of his teens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s obvious <\/span><b>Clavicular knows that shock content plays into the algorithm and gets rewarded on social media<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it doesn\u2019t change the fact that many of his followers are boys and young men who might take everything on face value or attempt to imitate the dangerous behaviors he advocates for. Some might even be tempted to pay $50 per month to access Clavicular\u2019s self-improvement course, complete with bonesmashing tutorials and advice on peptides. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to navigate looksmaxxing with your teen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most teenage boys will have been exposed to looksmaxxing content to varying degrees. Here are a few tips to make sure it doesn\u2019t get out of hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Have open conversations<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve caught your teen mewing, or using a ruler to determine their canthal tilt, ask them about it neutrally &#8211; and don\u2019t mock. It might seem silly to us, but they may be taking looksmaxxing very seriously. Remind them that social media often uses lighting, filters, and angles to make people look much better than they do in real life; that attractiveness cannot be measured on a completely objective scale; and that a person\u2019s value can\u2019t be defined by having a perfect jawline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect your child may have body image issues, child psychologist Nicole Beurkens has shared <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/negative-body-image-in-your-teen\/\">conversation starters, and advice on how parents can help promote a more positive body image<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Look for red flags<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looksmaxxing can lead to obsession and harmful behaviors, and impact a teen&#8217;s mental health. If you see your teen exhibiting any of these signs, it\u2019s time to step in and consider speaking to a counsellor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obsessive mirror-checking or taking hundreds of selfies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constantly comparing themselves to others<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harsh self-criticism about physical features<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talking about being \u201csub5,\u201d \u201cugly,\u201d or genetically doomed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fixation on jawlines, facial symmetry, height, or millimeter-level differences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restrictive dieting, skipping meals, or rapid weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excessive exercise or panic about missing workouts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secretive supplement, steroid, or peptide use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrawal from friends or social situations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talking about \u201chardmaxxing,\u201d surgery, or drastic procedures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>3. Encourage \u201csoftmaxxing\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all looksmaxxing advice is terrible. You could meet them halfway and support their self-improvement with some healthy \u201csoftmaxxing\u201d habits. These can include\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regular exercise and strength training, healthy eating, getting enough sleep (or \u201csleepmaxxing\u201d if you want to speak their language), skincare and sunscreen, grooming and hygiene, drinking enough water, dental hygiene, stress management, and building confidence and social skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, make sure they fit in some \u201cstudymaxxing\u201d to their routines too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4.
