Adjusted the lighting for the perfect snapshot? Uploaded a picture into the ether to see exactly what you’d have looked like in the 80s (even if you’d already been there once)? OK – perhaps the final example was a one-time thing, but part of today’s online experience is being able to carefully stage and edit reality, showing a curated version of what we look like, what our interests are, and what makes us the person we are.

An AI-powered internet has really shown that there’s no limit to what we can create. For young people and adults alike, our digital counterparts have become so normalized as we interact with others online. This alternate reality, combined with the anonymity and freedom from responsibility the internet offers, has also made it much easier for someone else to make their own version of anyone they want – a celebrity, the local mayor, your family members… or your child. Let’s take a look at what online copycats can look like for children, and what families can do about them.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

How does online impersonation affect children?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

If we look at impersonation through the lens of cyberbullying, for kids and teens, this kind of online behavior is more likely to come from someone a child already knows: a classmate, a former friend, someone they know on their sports team, or from school. But for copycats, a separate trend is also emerging – where strangers use fake identities to build trust with children. Strangers might choose to impersonate others for different reasons: getting money, images, or personal information from children.

When impersonation comes from someone who knows the child, it’s often more likely that they want to cause embarrassment and get a strong emotional reaction. In cases like this, children can feel humiliated, and it can impact the trust they have with friends or new people they meet. In more serious cases of impersonation, such as a stranger using a fake profile to pressure a child for money or further images (such as in patterns of sextortion), children can feel trapped and helpless.

Cyberbullying of all kinds tends to be more frequent among older children, but we do know that a small percentage of kids as young as 8 may also experience having fake profiles being used to target or scare them. That’s why it’s important to start conversations about privacy and sharing early – and that children know who and where they can immediately turn to talk about an incident like this.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

What can online impersonation look like?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Impersonation can come in different forms, so it’s important that parents understand the different ways copycats can build an online version of a child:

Catfishing: creating a fake identity to build a relationship with someone, often to get money, personal information, or images/video from them. Groomers may use this tactic to attempt to get close to a child.

Copycat or impersonation profiles: setting up a fake account or profile using someone’s name, photos, or details. This kind of profile could be set up to embarrass a child, spread rumors, damage their reputation, or get “revenge”.

Parody accounts: similar to impersonation profiles – such as a child setting up a fake account pretending to be their teacher, but to “entertain” or make others laugh. While these kinds of profiles are usually framed as a joke or are set up “just for fun”, they can still cause distress for a child if they haven’t consented to being represented in a particular way.

Deepfakes: AI-generated or altered images, video, or audio, which can be used as a tool for any of the above purposes, but which are increasingly linked to online extortion, blackmail, or sexual harassment.

Not every kind of fake account is built with malicious intent. In fact, teens sometimes create multiple accounts of their own, known as “Finstas” (“fake Instagram”) to express different sides of their personality or interact with people from different social circles.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Where does impersonation usually happen?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Instagram is often the most popular choice for creating fake accounts, simply because it’s so heavily tied to personal identity and self-expression. However, impersonation accounts can also easily be created on other popular platforms where teens hang out and spend time, such as TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube.

Generative AI has made it easier to create fake accounts, convincing fake images, videos, and audio, especially because this doesn’t require any real skill to produce anymore. Even more harmful uses, such as deepfake image generation, are simply a quick Google search away – easily used by, or against, children. A recent Thorn report on deepfake nudes found that 1 in 3 teens had heard of the term “deepfake nudes” and that 1 in 8 knew someone personally who had been targeted by one.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://static.qustodio.com/public-site/uploads/2026/09/28155135/2026-07-Blog-Online-copycats-what-to-do-if-someone-impersonates-your-child_Inside-Image.png” alt=”young boy looking down at phone with upset expression on his face” title_text=”2026-07-%91Blog%93-Online-copycats-what-to-do-if-someone-impersonates-your-child_Inside-Image” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Why might someone decide to impersonate my child online?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Fake profiles and copycat attempts are easier to pull off the more someone shares about themselves online, and they’re even easier when the person creating the impersonation profile or image already knows the child. Some common reasons behind fake profiles include:

Making fun of someone or hoping to cause embarrassment, often thought of by the impersonator as “just a prank”, or harmless “fun”

Revenge, such as a child who has been bullied in the past retaliating through impersonation – especially as this kind of retaliation can be done anonymously

Peer pressure, where a child goes along with something they don’t really want to do in order to fit in

Feeling jealousy or resentment towards a friend or another classmate

Attention-seeking, as dramatic or shocking content online tends to get more views, shares, and engagement

Curiosity – especially with tools like nudification apps, which some children try out without originally intending to cause any harm

The growing practice of “sextortion” is a related risk, where impersonation videos or deepfakes are used as leverage for money, or requesting further (often explicit) images. Generative AI, teamed with teens being more accessible and available online, has made it easier for perpetrators to contact victims and manipulate young people in this way.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

What can my child do if someone’s impersonating them online?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Children often find it difficult to talk about impersonation, especially if it involves personal information or images they shared. Firstly, it’s important that they know they’re not in trouble, and that you’re there to support them – any discussion about what led to the situation can come later.

Beyond this, the steps to tackle impersonation accounts and generated media include:

Blocking and reporting the account.

Finding out where else your child’s information may have been shared – depending on how serious this is, your child’s school or local law enforcement may need to be involved.

Not engaging with the account. Don’t comment, message, or respond to the account, and avoid spreading any information the account has posted (such as through sharing or forwarding).

Saving any communication your child has had with the account as evidence.

Aside from reacting in the moment, having regular conversations about signs to look for, protecting personal data online, and questioning any stranger being overly friendly or flattering online are important practices your family can build into everyday digital habits.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

What can my child do if someone sends them a deepfake image or video?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

The 2 most important steps a child can take here are reporting any image or video to the platform it was shared or posted on, and telling a trusted adult immediately.

If the incident involves nude or sexual imagery, your child will likely need more support in the aftermath than you might expect. Because content like this can look so real, victims of these incidents report lasting anxiety and a harder time trusting the people around them. Recovering from an incident like this may be a long process and will require lots of patience and compassion.

In the US, the Take It Down Act gives victims a way to have this content removed, and requires platforms to react in a specific window of time. Other countries, including the UK, Australia, and EU member states, have introduced similar protections and processes.

Remember NOT to share or take screenshots of any nude imagery involving a minor – even if you’re reporting it. In many places around the world, this can be treated as a criminal offense even if your intentions are good. Check local guidance before you do anything with the images, videos, or audio itself.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

How to help prevent online impersonation

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

While your child can’t completely prevent online impersonation from happening, there are steps families can take together to help reduce the risk and make sure children understand the consequences:

Platform awareness

Nearly every online platform prohibits outright impersonation, which is why reporting is so important in the moment. Check privacy and reporting settings on the platforms your child uses – especially on Instagram and social media profiles, where this kind of behavior most commonly occurs.

Sharing personal information

Aside from encouraging your child not to share personal information online, think about “sharenting” and how much identifying information you share about them. The less that’s out there, the harder it is for someone to build a convincing fake profile or use information against them.

Recognizing the harm impersonation causes

Just because something is fake, doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt. Impersonation often gets dismissed as less serious than other forms of bullying, but it can have very real consequences for young people involved. Talking through the emotions behind why children might do this in the first place can help: for example, peer pressure, jealousy, or wanting to take revenge. Understanding the “why” behind the behavior can help it feel something teens and families can navigate together.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

It can be worrying to think about someone impersonating your child or creating fake images of them online – but taking a look at the bigger picture, the reality is that this kind of behavior won’t affect the majority of kids. That said, online impersonation and AI imagery are things parents should keep in mind, especially when your child enters their tween and teen years. The best protection against online fakes, bullying, and copycats, is staying involved with your child’s digital life, and keeping lines of communication open, so your child feels able to come to you the moment something feels wrong.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

How many times have you used a beauty filter?
