Is there a parent in the world who hasn’t heard of Roblox?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The gaming platform has upward of <\/span>111 million daily users<\/span><\/a> and has solidified itself as a firm kid favorite.<\/span> The simple and colorful graphics, addictive gameplay, and limitless creative possibilities add up to make Roblox a huge hit with children everywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n According to our 2025 report, <\/span>Roblox was the most popular gaming app globally<\/span><\/a>, with kids spending an average of 1 hour 16 minutes per day playing on mobile and 2 hours 17 on desktop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Although Roblox has good points, there are key safety issues parents need to be aware of. Although Roblox itself and some games are free, <\/span>many are pay-to-play or encourage users to make in-game purchases<\/b> with <\/span>Robux, <\/span><\/i>the game\u2019s own virtual currency.<\/span><\/p>\n Each Roblox user is represented by an <\/span>avatar<\/span><\/i> – a character that can be customized with free and purchasable body parts, accessories, clothing, and much more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It might seem like Roblox is a recent addition to the digital world, but it\u2019s been around for quite a while. The first incarnation of Roblox was released in 2006, making it older than the iPhone and an antique in technological terms. The platform had a relatively small following for years until its popularity exploded in the late 2010s and even more so during the <\/span>COVID-19 pandemic<\/span><\/a>. While their parents were Zooming, kids were whiling away lockdowns around the world by playing, creating, and chatting to their friends on Roblox.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n \u201cLike\u201d might be an understatement. Obsessed may be more accurate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The pandemic drew a lot of kids to Roblox as the games entertained and allowed them to socialize with their friends when real-life interactions were impossible. Parents would connect with other parents to arrange gaming sessions for their little ones, relieved knowing their kids could keep up their social connections during a difficult time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Along with the cute Lego-like characters and colorful worlds, there are several possible reasons Roblox has become such a hit among kids.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n While<\/span> Roblox does not have a minimum age requirement to create an account, the platform automatically applies different safety measures depending on a user’s age.<\/span><\/p>\n In 2026, Roblox introduced two new account types for younger users: Roblox Kids (ages 5\u20138), and Roblox Select (ages 9\u201315).<\/b><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n Roblox Kids accounts are designed for younger children, with the strongest safety protections.<\/span><\/p>\n Roblox Select accounts are for older children and teens, allowing them to access a wider range of age-appropriate experiences and chat features. Note that age<\/span> verification<\/span><\/a> is required to access Roblox Select.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n As kids get older, Roblox gradually expands the features available to them while still providing parents with controls. Depending on the user’s age and location, this may include <\/span>facial age estimation<\/span><\/a> or government ID verification.<\/span><\/p>\n Once a user’s age has been verified, Roblox uses age-based safety settings to determine which communication features they can access<\/b>. Younger users have stricter communication controls, while older users may gain access to additional chat features as they age.<\/span><\/p>\n Roblox also places additional safeguards around communication between adults and minors. In some cases, users may need to verify a real-world relationship before some chat features become available – this might involve QR code scanning or contact importing to help confirm that the connection is genuine<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n However, parents shouldn\u2019t put all their trust in Roblox\u2019s facial age verification. There have been reports of <\/span>adults being mistakenly labeled as kids<\/span><\/a> and placed in the wrong age group – and vice versa – as well as instances of users fooling the age verification system with <\/span>deepfakes<\/span><\/a>, or by drawing mustaches or beards on their faces.<\/span><\/p>\n More worryingly, age-verified accounts for minors <\/span>have been found for sale on eBay for as little as $4<\/span><\/a>, potentially giving predators another way to slip through Roblox\u2019s defences.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Parents may also feel hesitant to complete age-verification checks. As a growing number of platforms require ID-based age verification, many people are feeling fatigued and wary of repeatedly being asked to share sensitive information – which may lead some parents of Roblox players to look for ways to skip these steps.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n Beyond the age-based <\/span>defaults<\/span>, Roblox has more parental controls to further help manage and protect a child\u2019s experience on the platform. To set these up, you\u2019ll need to <\/span>create a Roblox account with parent privileges and link it to your child\u2019s account.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n As well as permitting access to more chat and content options, a linked account allows you to:<\/span><\/p>\n While Roblox does have parental controls in place, they are not foolproof – parents need to link their account to their child’s account to use the full range of safety features. Even with linked accounts and age-verification measures, parents cannot take a backseat when it comes to their child\u2019s safety on the platform. <\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/static.qustodio.com\/public-site\/uploads\/2021\/05\/10081718\/2024-06-Blog_Is-Roblox-Safe-for-kids_InsideImage.png” alt=”Young girl playing Roblox on tablet” title_text=”2024-06-Blog_Is-Roblox-Safe-for-kids_InsideImage” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n With over <\/span>half of all 7-9-year-olds<\/span><\/a> playing, it\u2019s not surprising that parents of young children are concerned about the safety aspects of Roblox – and they should be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n After spending time on Roblox and speaking to other parents about their kids\u2019 experiences on the platform, here are the main safety concerns we think you should be aware of.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Potential for dangerous interactions<\/b><\/p>\n Like with most multi-player gaming platforms, Roblox users can send messages and chat to others in-game as well as on the Roblox app or website. <\/span>Even with age verification, text filters, and human-monitored chat, there\u2019s still the potential for <\/span>sexual predators<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>cyberbullies<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>sextortionists<\/span><\/a>, and other dangerous users to connect with your child on Roblox. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cCondos\u201d and inappropriate content<\/b><\/p>\n One of Roblox\u2019s main appeals is the freedom a user has to create games, avatar clothing, and more – but on the flip side, this means young players can encounter things a parent wouldn’t want them to.<\/span><\/p>\n Despite Roblox having rules and making efforts to moderate user-generated content, plenty slips through the cracks. Examples include games featuring simulated sex acts, graphic violence, and bad language.<\/span><\/p>\n The worst of this takes place in \u201ccondos\u201d – basically sex-based games that blatantly violate Roblox\u2019s terms of service. <\/b>Condos are where users go to talk about sex and to simulate sex via their avatars. <\/span>According to the BBC,<\/span><\/a> \u201cmuch of what is written on chats in condos is unprintable on a grown-up news website, let alone a children’s game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Condos are usually only discoverable for a short time, often less than an hour, as the Roblox team plays whack-a-mole trying to remove them as new ones appear.<\/span><\/p>\n Online dating<\/b><\/p>\n Roblox isn\u2019t a dating platform and its rules prohibit chat that’s sexual in nature, but that doesn\u2019t stop ODers (online daters) from using games such as Brookhaven or Royale High to find romantic partners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n While most ODers are just looking to connect with other ODers, knowing that adults are using Roblox for this purpose is a red flag for any parent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In-app purchases\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n Roblox is free to download and use. The platform makes its money by selling Robux which users can spend on games, clothing and accessories for their avatars, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n Some kids have become big spenders on the platform – without their parents knowing. There are stories from all over the world of parents discovering <\/span>monster credit card bills<\/span><\/a> thanks to their Roblox-loving kids.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Scams<\/b><\/p>\n Scams are rife in most corners of the internet and Roblox is no exception. On Roblox, scammers often <\/span>exploit the naivety of children<\/span><\/a> to con them out of Robux or gain access to their accounts and personal information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There are several sophisticated scams to be aware of, including \u201cfree Robux\u201d. This is when a user is promised Robux in exchange for completing surveys, clicking on links, or sharing personal information. Players give away sensitive information or access to their accounts for Robux that never materialize.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Trading scams are also common. For example, a scammer might offer a high-value item for several lower-value ones, only to swap the item for a worthless one at the last minute.<\/span><\/p>\n Gaming addiction<\/b><\/p>\n On average, kids spend over 2 hours daily on Roblox – but some are clocking up many more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Around <\/span>2% of children and adolescents <\/span><\/a>are considered to be <\/span>addicted to gaming<\/span><\/a> – and yes, gaming addiction is a real thing. Health organizations have officially recognized the condition <\/span>Internet Gaming Disorder<\/span><\/a> (IGD) as a pattern of excessive and compulsive gaming behavior that leads to significant impairment or distress.<\/span><\/p>\n Roblox\u2019s creativity, challenge, novelty, strong social aspect, and in-game purchases hammer that dopamine release button and keep kids coming back for more.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n Roblox’s popularity isn\u2019t going away any time soon \u2013 and despite the potential dangers, the platform offers kids valuable opportunities to play, create, and hang out with their friends.<\/span><\/p>\n If your child is a Robloxian, or you\u2019re considering allowing your child to play, here are 7 ways to help make their Roblox experience a safe and happy one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 1. Set up a linked parent account<\/b><\/p>\n If you only have time to do one thing to keep your child safe on Roblox, it should be to link your accounts. This lets you manage and lock in their safety and privacy settings, allowing you to manage screen time, control chat and social settings, restrict access to age-rated content, and more.<\/span> Linking a parent account is strongly recommended for all Roblox users under 16.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 2. Show an interest<\/b><\/p>\n Talk to your child about their favorite games, their avatar, and ask if you can watch them play – or even play yourself. This will give you a better understanding of Roblox and open the doors to conversation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n As well as discovering areas where you might need to tighten safety settings, taking an interest may make your child feel more comfortable talking to you about troubling things they encounter on the platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 3. Ensure your child\u2019s account is for the correct age<\/b><\/p>\n Roblox allows access to games appropriate to the user\u2019s age and restricts chat options for younger users to keep them from being contacted by adults. Like all age-estimation technologies, Roblox\u2019s facial age verification is not perfect and may misjudge a user’s age.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> 4. Regularly review safety settings\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n Once you’ve linked your account, you can manage a range of safety settings, including communication features, content access, screen time limits, and spending controls.<\/span><\/p>\n To help keep your child safe, regularly review their connections and privacy settings, and consider limiting who can contact them if needed.
