This can be a great thing, but it can also create risks, especially when it comes to content online. <\/span><b>Virtually every child will be exposed to some type of developmentally inappropriate content online<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at some point during their growing-up years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of this exposure is unintentional, especially in younger children. As they grow it is more likely their curiosity will lead them to intentionally search for information and other content around topics you\u2019d prefer they didn\u2019t. Knowing <\/span><b>how to support kids and address these issues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an important part of parenting in the digital age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.18.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>The effects of inappropriate content on young people<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.18.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When children and teens view content that is inappropriate for their developmental level, it can lead to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embarrassment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shame<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concerns most often raised are around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/viewing-pornography-online-harm-children-teens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pornography<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promoting unsafe or unhealthy sexual activities. However, <\/span><b>any type of developmentally inappropriate content can cause fear and distress in young people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether it\u2019s sexual in nature or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can include dramatic content or stories that are above their current level of understanding, any type of violence, substance use, self-harming behaviors, and any type of information they are too young to comprehend. <\/span><b>I often see kids in my practice who keep secrets about what they\u2019re viewing online<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because they are scared or ashamed to talk with adults about it, and it can lead to so much confusion and distress that shows up in their daily relationships and behavior.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.18.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Why is there so much disturbing content on YouTube?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.18.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube has become <\/span><b>one of the primary platforms where children, including very young children, view content online<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While some of the videos are safe, developmentally appropriate, and entertaining for kids, the reality is that there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/sep\/13\/unboxing-bad-baby-evil-santa-youtube-swamped-creepy-kids-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an increasingly large number of videos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have had the experience of setting your child up with the tablet to watch a video of their favorite cartoon, only to discover a little while later that they\u2019ve also viewed several concerning videos you didn\u2019t know about. This is a common occurrence, and <\/span><b>the algorithms and auto-play features of YouTube <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(and other platforms) can lead to kids being exposed to content they and their parents never intended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important for parents to be aware that many videos online have words, character names, and other things in the title that seem to indicate safe child-focused programming, but <\/span><b>in reality they\u2019re not<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Emotions can run high, and we run the risk of reacting in ways that shame our kids and end up making them more secretive about what they\u2019re seeing. Here are steps you can take:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. The first thing to do if this happens is to <\/span><b>work on staying calm and regulating your own emotions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s often best to wait until you\u2019re calm and have thought it through before addressing the situation with your child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. The next step is to <\/span><b>approach your child with a stance of curiosity and support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead of blaming and shaming, we want to ask questions like \u201ctell me more about that video\u201d, \u201cshow me how you got to that page\u201d, or \u201chow did that make you feel\u201d. These kinds of questions lead to open communication and help your child process and learn from the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. It\u2019s important to address issues related to safety, health, and discerning what content is OK and what isn\u2019t. This obviously evolves as your child grows, which is why these conversations need to happen ongoing. <\/span><b>Tell your child what content is not OK and why<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including your concerns about what could happen for them if they view inappropriate content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might be wondering <\/span><b>how you can help your child to recognize inappropriate content online<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some ways to help them think about what\u2019s OK to view and what isn\u2019t:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the video something you\u2019d be comfortable watching with your own parent?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are there things that feel confusing to you?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is anyone being harmed?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are the people wearing clothes or not?, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Be clear with your child about what they should do if they inadvertently come across something that they think isn\u2019t safe or healthy for them. By maintaining open and supportive communication you increase the likelihood that they will tell you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure they know who they can talk to about these things, and <\/span><b>show them how to report these kinds of videos and other content <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the apps they use. Helping your child report inappropriate content is also a good way to model taking action to protect themselves and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.18.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>How to protect children from inappropriate content online<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.18.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with most things in life, prevention is the best approach whenever possible. While it\u2019s not reasonable to expect that kids will never be exposed to inappropriate content online, even with the best protections in place,<\/span><b> there are proactive steps parents can take to minimize this issue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
