Not so fast! While we might like the idea of taking in as much information as possible, and getting multiple things done at the same time, our brains just don\u2019t work that way. In fact, <\/span><b>multitasking can lead to added challenges and problems in the long term <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 especially for children and teens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is media multitasking?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media multitasking refers to engaging in multiple media activities simultaneously, or <\/span><b>consistently switching between different media platforms or apps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This can involve tasks such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">texting while watching television<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">browsing the internet while listening to music<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">playing video games while checking social media<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In today&#8217;s technologically advanced world, where devices and media are all around us, this kind of <\/span><b>media or screen multitasking has become increasingly common among children and teenagers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Research conducted in recent years indicates that children and teens are highly engaged in media multitasking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/report\/2019-census-8-to-18-full-report-updated.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 survey by Common Sense Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that among 8- to 18-year-olds, the average daily media usage time was over seven hours. Around <\/span><b>40% of this time was spent engaging in multiple media activities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concurrently. This high prevalence of media multitasking is something important to pay attention to, as it can have concerning consequences for young people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Why is media multitasking a problem?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While media multitasking may seem like a convenient way to stay connected and entertained, <\/span><b>it can have several negative consequences for children and teenagers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This can impair learning, memory, and academic performance in children and teens. While it may not seem like a big deal at the time, this type of multiscreening essentially trains the brain to not focus on anything for longer periods of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leads to obvious challenges in the classroom and anywhere else sustained attention and thinking are required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also know that there can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23126438\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a link between media multitasking and increased symptoms of anxiety and depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adolescents. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/09\/140924144949.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies have found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that f<\/span><b>requent media multitasking leads to structural changes in the brain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that lead to reduced attention, regulation, and decision making.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also know that high levels of simultaneous media use predicts reductions in cognitive control abilities over time. Cognitive control includes being able to inhibit impulsive behaviors, switch tasks efficiently, and maintain focus. This means that <\/span><b>media multitasking may have long-term consequences <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the development of executive functions in children and teenagers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/does-technology-affect-childrens-focus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screen time in general can negatively impact focus and attention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so this added multitasking issue is even more problematic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>What can parents do to reduce media multitasking for kids?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As parents, <\/span><b>there are several strategies you can use to reduce this type of multitasking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and promote healthier media habits for your children:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1.
