You have a new message.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n The tiny dopamine hit we feel when we see these words on our screens may help explain why direct messaging apps are among the most popular apps – for adults and kids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Our annual data report showed that <\/span>kids in the US spent 45 minutes <\/span><\/a>every day exchanging messages on WhatsApp, Messenger, and similar apps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But parents need to be aware of another, more controversial, messaging app that\u2019s particularly popular among young teens.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Kik is a Canadian-born messaging app that claims to be \u201cyour place to chat and message with all of your friends and to make new ones.\u201d The app\u2019s popularity has grown steadily over the past decade and now has over <\/span>300 million registered users<\/span><\/a> worldwide; 70% of them aged between 13 and 24 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n Although Kik is classed as a messaging app, functions like <\/span>anonymous chat<\/b> and<\/span> live streaming<\/b> differentiate it from other apps like WhatsApp and Viber – and cause Kik to be a major safety concern for parents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n The main functions of Kik are <\/span>one-to-one chatting<\/b>, <\/span>sending videos, pictures, gifs<\/b>, etc., <\/span>group chatting<\/b>, <\/span>live streaming<\/b>, and <\/span>promoted chats<\/b>; <\/span><\/i>a feature that allows brands to engage with users through chatbots.<\/span><\/p>\n Public groups<\/b> allow users to meet like-minded people based on their interests. Users are anonymous<\/b><\/p>\n Being able to chat anonymously without parents knowing is probably what attracts so many teens to Kik in the first place, but it\u2019s also what makes the app so potentially dangerous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There are no requirements for a Kik user to sign up with their real name or phone number<\/b> – all a user needs is an email address which can easily be created in minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Users can receive direct messages (DMs) from anonymous users without having to accept an invite first, meaning teens can be sent texts, pictures, or videos without their consent. You can opt to disallow messages from strangers in the chat settings, but the default is to allow messages from anyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This anonymity <\/span>effectively shields <\/b>cyberbullies<\/b><\/a>, sexual predators, <\/b>sextortionists<\/b><\/a>, and other users who are out to cause harm.<\/span><\/p>\n 2. Teens make up a large chunk of its users<\/b><\/p>\n Many of the app\u2019s attractions, like anonymous chatting, meeting people and dating, and live streaming, speak directly to the young. Coupled with Kik being free to use, it\u2019s unsurprising that a large proportion of its users are teens.<\/span><\/p>\n Worryingly, this unprotected pool of young people will appeal to sexual predators and others looking to take advantage of the impressionable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 3. Kik has dating apps<\/b><\/p>\n Although Kik is first and foremost a messaging app, you can search for third-party apps within Kik\u2019s internal browser. Two of the most popular are the dating apps <\/span>Match & Chat<\/em>, and <\/span>Flirt!<\/em><\/p>\n Both apps turn Kik into a Tinder-like experience where the user is encouraged to find romance by swiping on profiles based on age and other preferences.<\/span><\/p>\n Many parents would be concerned about their kids using dating apps in general –\u00a0 <\/span>but ones where users can remain anonymous and fake their ages?<\/b> That\u2019s a chilling thought for any family.<\/span><\/p>\n 4.
