Then we have the scientific researchers who have been raising alarm bells about kids and social media use for the past decade, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.cureus.com\/uploads\/review_article\/pdf\/176889\/20230904-18910-555yiy.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent studies showing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serious concerns about the negative impact of social media use on child and teen mental health and functioning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Should children be on social media?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now today, as I am writing this, the Surgeon General of the United States is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/17\/opinion\/social-media-health-warning.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demanding that a warning notice be placed on social media apps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the danger these platforms pose to child mental health. Similar to what the US government has done previously with alcohol and cigarettes, he believes the evidence has reached a tipping point where <\/span><b>parents need to be visually warned about the dangers that the use of these platforms pose to their kids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this begs the question of whether our children and teens (and perhaps any of us) should be on social media in the first place. However, given that many kids are currently on these platforms, and that older teens can benefit from \u201cpractice\u201d with managing social media use with parental guidance prior to leaving their parents\u2019 home, <\/span><b>it seems very relevant to provide guidance to parents on how best to manage social media with kids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here I will specifically address the issue of whether parents should follow their kids on social media apps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question involves many layers, including considerations of well-being, privacy, trust, and safety. In this article, we\u2019ll explore why parents need to be aware of their kids&#8217; social media activities, what to do if your child is secretive about their social media use, the pros and cons of following them, the best practices for monitoring, and how parents can set a positive example with their own social media usage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Why parents need to be aware of what their kids are doing on social media<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many parents may think of social media as a way for their kids to stay connected to friends and up on the most recent trends, there is a serious dark side to be aware of. Social media exposes kids to potential risks such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/signs-of-cyberbullying\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyberbullying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/inappropriate-content-online\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inappropriate (even dangerous) content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/when-and-how-to-talk-to-your-child-about-online-predators\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online predators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond these safety concerns, there are major mental health and overall wellness issues to consider. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11920-023-01478-w\"><b>Research shows the significant negative impact<\/b><\/a><b> social media use has <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(especially for longer periods of time daily)<\/span><b> on kids\u2019 focus, sleep, social relationships, self-esteem, body image and eating behaviors, anxiety, mood, overall behavior, and more. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can select virtually any area of child mental health and find a study showing at some degree of negative impact related to social media use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given this, it makes sense for parents to take responsibility not only for making an informed choice about allowing their children access to these platforms, but for supporting healthier social media use and habit development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/static.qustodio.com\/public-site\/uploads\/2024\/07\/02135427\/Should-you-follow-your-kids-on-social-media__InsideImage-1.jpg&#8221; alt=&#8221;Kids having fun taking selfies&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Should you follow your kids on social media__InsideImage&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2><b>I think my child is on social media, but they don\u2019t want me to know about it<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><b>Whether a child is on social media or not is a decision for parents to make<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, despite what kids want to believe. You need to take into account all the things you know about your child, and make a decision about when and how they are able to access these platforms on their devices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, children\u2019s natural curiosity (and the normal drive to sometimes test or break the rules) means <\/span><b>parents need to have extra layers of protection in place to ensure kids can\u2019t access apps and content<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019ve determined are inappropriate. This should involve utilizing parental control options on the devices themselves, as well as installing and consistently monitoring an external <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parental control <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tool<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Qustodio. These tools are your partner in helping ensure your children aren\u2019t able to access things until you\u2019ve determined they\u2019re ready.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a child has installed and is using social media on their device without your permission, know that <\/span><b>it\u2019s common for teens especially to seek privacy and autonomy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This extends to their online lives. It\u2019s important for you to <\/span><b>approach the situation with sensitivity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Start by having an open and honest conversation about your concerns and the reasons behind them:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasize that your primary interest is their safety and well-being, and talk about the real risks of mental health issues and safety concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sit down together and look at what they have installed and how they\u2019re using it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refrain from angry responses or punishments, as this will only lead to more secrecy on their part.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware that kids can have multiple profiles on these apps, so it\u2019s important to understand the ways they may be using even the apps you have approved for them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Pros and cons of following your child on social media<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way many parents consider monitoring their kids\u2019 social media use is through following them on the various platforms. <\/span><b>My perspective as both a professional psychologist and a mom of 4 kids is that this makes good sense.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> After all, we should be teaching kids that nothing they do online is really private, and they shouldn\u2019t be doing or posting anything that they wouldn\u2019t be OK with adults seeing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you feel your teen is ready for social media access, then <\/span><b>one of the initial rules should be that a parent will follow their account<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is important for younger teens, and is a strategy that can be reduced over time as kids get older and demonstrate safe behavior and healthy habits. There are some specific pros and cons to weigh when making this decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Pros:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Safety monitoring &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following your child on social media allows you to monitor their interactions and ensure they are not engaging with harmful content or people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strengthening relationships &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can provide opportunities to connect over shared interests and stay involved in their lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Role modeling &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can demonstrate appropriate online behavior and help them understand the importance of digital etiquette.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Teaching opportunities \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When you see concerning behavior from your child you can use it as an opportunity to calmly discuss and provide important feedback and guidance. These real-life situations provide highly valuable learning opportunities when we\u2019re aware of them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Cons:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Privacy concerns &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teenagers value their privacy, and having parents follow them can feel intrusive, potentially leading to secretive behavior. It\u2019s helpful to have clear ongoing conversations about what you\u2019re monitoring and how often.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Trust issues &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-monitoring can lead to a breakdown in trust between parents and teens. It\u2019s important for teens to feel like their parents trust them to make good decisions, especially as they get closer to young adulthood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Embarrassment &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teens might feel embarrassed by their parents&#8217; presence on social media, which can impact the relationship. Parents should talk with kids before actually engaging with the content they post. It\u2019s possible (and preferable) to monitor quietly without constantly commenting and engaging with your child\u2019s content.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Parent dos and don\u2019ts if you follow kids on social media<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve decided that following your child\u2019s social media accounts is an appropriate strategy, there are some key things you should and should not do in order to make the experience beneficial for all involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Do:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Respect their space &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid commenting on every post or being active on their profile at all. Allow them some privacy and discuss the level of engagement they would like you to have before you start liking or commenting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Have open conversations &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss their online experiences regularly and without judgment to encourage open communication.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Set boundaries &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agree on clear rules regarding social media use and stick to them consistently. This includes them not altering parental control settings on their devices or apps.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid being overbearing &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constant monitoring and commenting can make your child feel suffocated. Don\u2019t harp on about every little thing you see, and give them appropriate leeway to be kids.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t publicly embarrass them &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid posting or commenting in ways that could embarrass your child in front of their peers. When in doubt, don\u2019t post anything at all on their accounts!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t ignore red flags &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice concerning behavior or content, address it calmly and privately. This is an important opportunity to help them learn and to intervene with potential problems before they get out of control.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2><b>How closely should we monitor them?<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is that any teen getting on social media for the first time (which should be <\/span><b>no younger than 13<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per the rules of the apps themselves) benefits from parental monitoring and support, including following their accounts. <\/span><b>The level of monitoring can and should shift as they get older <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and demonstrate reliable, responsible and safe behavior over time, as well as showing habits that indicate they\u2019re not experiencing worsening mental health as a result of their app usage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For younger teens closer supervision is necessary, while older teens may benefit from more autonomy. <\/span><b>Teens who feel like their parents are supportive and communicative are less likely to engage in risky behavior in general<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and this includes online. Striking a balance between supervision and trust is key. Use parental controls and monitoring tools, including account following, to stay informed without being invasive, and use strategies to help teens <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/use-social-media-in-a-healthy-way\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">navigate social media in a healthy way<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Setting an example with our own social media usage<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The saying about kids learning more from what we do than what we say is definitely true! This includes what they observe with our own online and social media behavior. <\/span><b>Modeling healthy social media habits ourselves is key in fostering responsible and healthy use in our kids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demonstrate responsible use of these platforms by avoiding oversharing, maintaining privacy, and being respectful online \u2013 both in your own posts and in your comments on other content. Monitor how often you\u2019re on these apps, and how it may be impacting your wellness. <\/span><b>Talk with your kids about your observations of your own habits, and how you\u2019re shifting them as needed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Show your children how to critically evaluate content and practice empathy and kindness in digital interactions. <\/span><b>By setting a good example, you teach them to navigate social media responsibly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and can minimize the negative impacts on their physical and mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deciding whether to follow your child on social media involves balancing their need for privacy with your responsibility to ensure their safety.
