With TikTok\u2019s future in the US on <\/span>shaky ground<\/span><\/a>, app developers are frantically trying to capitalize by introducing alternative platforms. Launched early 2024, Scoopz is one of the frontrunners hoping to steal TikTok\u2019s crown as king of video-based social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scoopz’s age rating of 18 on the Google Play Store suggests that the app isn\u2019t made for children<\/b> – but we all know that doesn\u2019t stop curious kids from seeing what all the fuss is about!<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Scoopz?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Scoopz is a short-form video platform in the same vein as TikTok with over <\/span>1m downloads<\/span><\/a> on the Play Store. The app promises an ad-free viewing experience, letting you consume an uninterrupted stream of \u201creal\u201d video content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like on TikTok, <\/span>users can scroll through videos tailored to their interests or watch content from accounts they follow<\/b>. They can like and dislike videos, and engage with other users through comments. They can also create and share their own videos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rather than a copycat app, <\/span>Scoopz attempts to differentiate itself from its massive rival by appealing to more mature audiences<\/b> – think local news and community events over challenges and viral dances.<\/span><\/p>\n

While that might sound reassuring for parents, don\u2019t give your child the green light to download just yet!<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Scoopz app safe for kids?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Scoopz app\u2019s tagline, \u201cReal Life, Real Video\u201d could well refer to the <\/span>lack of censorship and moderation <\/b>on the platform\u2019s content. And, after using the app, we understand why the App Store and Play Store have given Scoopz a 17+ and 18 rating respectively. Many of the videos we came across are in no way suitable for children.<\/span><\/p>\n

After testing Scoopz ourselves and speaking to other users, these are the biggest parental red flags we\u2019ve seen:<\/span><\/p>\n

The app\u2019s lack of censorship means your child can be easily exposed to bad language and nudity as well as extremely violent and <\/span>disturbing content<\/span><\/a>. Without searching for them, we were presented with videos of fatal accidents and grizzly deaths that unfortunately appeared to be genuine. <\/span><\/p>\n

Lack of privacy controls<\/b><\/p>\n

Whereas TikTok offers users the option to make their account private, Scoopz does not; others are free to follow your account, comment on your videos, and reply to comments you\u2019ve left. This could <\/span>make it easy for <\/b>predators<\/b><\/a> to spark connections with your child <\/b>based on their interests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scoopz does allow you to hide your location. However, if it\u2019s left unchecked, your child\u2019s whereabouts are shared in their bio and whenever they upload a video.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Given that the app isn\u2019t aimed at children, we could give them a pass on this; but it\u2019s worth keeping in mind if your child wants to use Scoopz.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>parental control tool<\/span><\/a> like Qustodio can fill the role by limiting your child\u2019s use of Scoopz or blocking the app completely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The platform might have similarities to TikTok, but this lack of essential safety features means it has a long way to go before it can be regarded as a legitimate rival or replacement, especially in the eyes of parents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
