This is one of the top concerns parents raise at my clinic when it comes to their child\u2019s online activities and mental health. While <\/span><b>curiosity about sex is a normal part of development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, regular exposure to pornography (especially from an early age) can have serious negative impacts on a teen\u2019s emotional, social, and neurological development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a clinical psychologist and parent, I know how uncomfortable and overwhelming this topic can feel. However, it\u2019s one of the most important conversations we can have with our children. Whether your teen is occasionally exposed to porn, or is showing signs of problematic use, <\/span><b>understanding the risks and knowing how to respond<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can make a lasting difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Understanding teen porn use: why it matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most kids encounter online porn long before parents start to talk with them about it. Common Sense Media reported that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/press-releases\/new-report-reveals-truths-about-how-teens-engage-with-pornography\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">73% of teens ages 13-17 years old have watched pornography online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with more than half reporting they were first exposed before the age of 13. While teen boys tend to have higher levels of exposure than teen girls, <\/span><b>porn is an issue for all teens regardless of gender<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids viewing porn online, whether purposely or accidentally, is a major concern for parents. Qustodio\u2019s 2024 data report showed that adult content was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/the-digital-dilemma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest motivator for families when choosing to monitor their children\u2019s devices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with 73% of parents expressing they were concerned about their children encountering sexual content online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeated exposure to highly stimulating content like pornography <\/span><b>can lead to compulsive viewing behavior<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (aka \u201caddiction\u201d) for people of all ages. This is especially true for teens, whose brains are still developing in the areas related to impulse control, emotional regulation, and judgment. This is a concern not only of parents, but also of many teens (boys especially)who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/23268743.2023.2267593#abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often report feeling worried about whether they are \u201caddicted\u201d to online pornography.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s important to know that there are distinct symptoms and features that determine whether something has become \u201caddictive\u201d in nature, and this is true for any substance or behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While \u201cpornography addiction\u201d is not currently a formal diagnosis, many clinicians treat it under the broader category of <\/span><b>compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A teen may be experiencing porn addiction or compulsive use if they exhibit persistent, repetitive behaviors related to pornography that meet the following general criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Loss of control<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over their porn use (e.g. trying to cut down but unable to)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Continued use despite negative consequences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as poor grades, broken relationships, or emotional distress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Time-consuming viewing <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with increasingly greater time spent seeking, watching, or recovering from porn use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Neglect of important areas of life,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including academics, friendships, or family<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Escalation or tolerance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that leads to needing more extreme content to feel the same effects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Emotional reliance,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including using porn to cope with anxiety, stress, loneliness, or boredom<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clinical problem may be present when these patterns last for at least 6 months and cause significant distress or impairment. Early and ongoing conversation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk about sex, relationships, and internet safety as early and as often as it makes sense. Frame the conversation around values like respect, consent, and emotional connection. It\u2019s critical to let your teen know they can come to you without fear of punishment or shame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect they\u2019ve already been exposed to porn, approach it calmly.
