A study reported by Time reveals that when Internet addicts step away from their devices, they suffer some of the same withdrawal symptoms that drug users experience. The subjects of the study were evaluated for signs of anxiety and depressed mood after spending just 15 minutes online. Researchers concluded that the "comedown" the individuals experienced mimicked that of ecstasy users.
Although Internet addiction is yet to be an actual diagnosable condition, the American Psychiatric Association is paying close attention to the long-term effects of heavy Internet use such as depression, for instance.
