Father Pays his Daughter $200 to Leave Facebook

One dad in Boston is taking measures to protect his daughter from the dangers of social media, but in a very nontraditional way. Paul Baier posted the Facebook Deactivation Agreement signed by both he and his 14-year old daughter on his blog Practical Sustainability. The terms of the contract? $200 in exchange for a 5-month hiatus.

Baier says he’s surprised at all the media attention he’s getting, but hopes it will inspire others to take a break from the social networking site as well. Not everyone agrees that bribing kids to step away from social media is a good thing, but it seems more and more people agree that taking a break from Facebook is necessary. CNN, who reported the story, says 61% of users have left the site for a few weeks or more, according to a Pew Research Center study.
