Does My Kid Have Internet Use Disorder?

Just found out that my child’s slight minecraft video game addiction may mean he is well on his way to his first mental health diagnosis.

According to the Australian online site news.com.au, thatreportedthis story, the American Psychiatric Association will publish a revised edition of the DSM-V (aka the Bible of Psychiatric Disorders). The manual will get a new entry for Internet Use Disorder, or “IUD”. According to the entry in the DSM, symptoms of IUD include:

An intense desire to play online gamesAnxiety when faced with more than a few minutes of non-gamingAvoiding other activities due to gamingLying to parents about the amount of time spent gamingThe need to play online games to feel happy

What do you think about giving video game addiction a label as a psychiatric illness? Is it another step towards promoting the over-medication of society, or is it a deserved label for a real problem?
